Understanding and teaching critical thinking: A cognitive perspective

Lauren Bellaera

Critical thinking is one of the top goals of education and, arguably now more than ever, it is crucial that young people can think critically. This talk will discuss how educators understand and teach critical thinking and suggest learning strategies to support the development of these higher-order skills. Lauren will share findings from her recent study that she undertook in collaboration with Dr Yana Weinstein-Jones, which examined how educational practitioners and academics define and teach critical thinking. Alongside this, based on cognitive research, Lauren will discuss promising learning strategies for the teaching of critical thinking skills.
