Board games in secondary and higher education for sustainable development – to improve teaching efficiency and interdisciplinary collaboration
The choice of approach to discussions about technology and sustainable development will usually depend on wether you are a scientist in chemistry, physics, social sciences or engineering. To be prepared for the future, students must be encouraged to learn interdisciplinary and take part in different views in the debate. The use of board games as tools for teaching is an effective way of improving efficiency, demonstrating opposing views and encouraging an element of collaboration in a non-threatening context and interdisciplinary topics are naturally invoked while playing. The session reports on student and teacher experiences of using the games in secondary schools and university classes.
Helena Lennholm is Associate Professor in Wood Chemistry. After working as an upper secondary teacher in chemistry and natural science for 12 years, she is now back at KTH as post doctorate researcher and senior lecturer in technology and chemistry didactics. She is also director of the “Engineering and Education” program at KTH. Her research concerns teaching for sustainable development.
